Montezuma II
The major civilization in Veracruz was the Aztecs, led by Montezuma II. Cortéz set out for the Aztec capital, Tenochtitlán, which ended up being a three-month journey over rough grounds. Some theories suggest Cortéz’ arrival was a coincidence with an Aztec prophecy about a white-skinned god arriving from the east, which explains why Montezuma welcomed Cortés and gave him luxurious gifts. However, relationships soon became foul and, worrying the Aztecs would plan an attack, Cortéz took Montezuma as a hostage, and demanded a large ransom from the remaining Aztecs.
April 1520, Velázquez sent an expedition to kidnap Cortéz. As Cortéz left to head further into the expedition, the Aztecs revolted, and started it in Tenochtitlán. Cortéz returned and returned Montezuma to face the crowd, but the Montezuma was stoned and died. The Spanish were eventually driven out of the city, which came with a large amount of losses.
